A dead blog

This site is going to have a lot less postings over the summer about the Tigers. The reason is because I am going to be writing most of the game reports for Tigerblog.net. Check there from now on if you want game recaps. I will still write on this site a little but only if there is important news.

The Tigers lost 7-5 yesterday.

Tigers 17 Royals 7

The Tigers smoked the Royals today 17-7. They collected 27 hits, tying their franchise record. Their 27 hits was also a high for the Majors this season.

Carlos Pena had a huge day collecting 6 hits and hitting 2 homeruns. He became just the 5th Tiger to ever have 6 hits in one game. He even added 5 RBIs on the day.

The Tigers took a 10-2 lead in the 5th inning when they scored 6 runs on 8 hits. They sent 10 men to the plate in that inning.

Nate Robertson(4-3) got the start and picked up his fourth victory of the season, allowing only two runs on three hits over five innings.

The Tigers are now 22-23 on the season.

Tigers 3 Royals 4

The UMP might have cost the Tigers the game last night in the top of the 9th inning. With one out the Tigers had runners at first and third base. Pudge came up to bat and hit a grounder to the shortstop. He flipped the ball over to the second baseman to get the second out of the inning. The second baseman then threw the ball to first base. Pudge was called safe and the game tying run had already touched home. But the UMPS said that Carlos Guillen, who was on first base, had interfered with the throw because he didn't slide. They called both runners out and the Royals won the game. It was a close call that probably should't have been made with the game on the line. I guess that's just the Tigers' dumb luck.
Notes-Maroth(4-3) picked up the loss....

Mariners 3 Tigers 1

The Tigers are once again one game under 500 after losing to the Mariners yesterday 3-1. Bonderman(4-3) got the start for the Tigers and pitched good going 7 innings and giving up only 3 runs. He couln't get the run support and he had to take his third loss of the season. The entire Tigers team only had 5 hits and scored only 1 run. This was a tough loss to take but the Tigers still took 2/3 games from the Mariners to win yet another series. They are now 21-22 on the season. The Tigers finish their road trip in Kansas City starting Tuesday at 8:10pm ET.
Notes-Bonderman gave up 9 hits and struckout 5....In the 8th inning the Tigers had runners at first and second base with no outs but they couldn't capitalize....Monroe picked up his 7th rbi of the road trip....

Back to 500

The Tigers are once again 500 after beating the Mariners late last night 8-4. Jason Johnson(3-5) got the start for Detroit and went 8 1/3 innings to pick up his third victory of the season. Detroit broke open the game in the 8th inning when Craiq Monroe hit a double that cleared the bases to make it 5-2 Tigers. The Tigers scored a few more runs to put the game out of reach. They are now 21-21 on the season.
Notes-Jason Johnson fell 2 outs short of the first complete game victory for any Tigers' pitcher since 2002....The Tigers were 0-16 this year when trailing after the 7th inning(before this game)....Jason Johnson allowed 7 hits....

The Tigers got homeruns from Carlos Pena and Eric Munson. In the ninth inning the Mariners loaded the bases but Urbina shut them down. This was a nice victory for Detroit after losing a couple games in a row. They are now 20-21 on the season.

Some Sad Tiger News

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The Tigers received some sad news Thursday about a former Tiger. Ben Petrick was forced to retire after his 4 year battle with Parkinson's Disease. He played with Detroit last year and was brought over for Adam Bernero. In the 43 games he played for the Tigers, he hit .225 with four homers and 12 RBIs. This year he was playing for San Diego's Triple-A club in Portland, Oregon. It is sad when a guy has to retire because of a desease. We hope that he gets better from this disease as quick as possible.
Game Notes-The Tigers lost again yesterday against the Oakland A's. Oakland barely beat them 3-2. Tim Hudson got the start and looked good to pick up the victory. The Tigers got 10 hits off Hudson but they couldn't capitalize enough. They are now 19-21 on the season.

Tigers 2 Oakland 6

The Tigers were outplayed last night by the A's losing to them 6-2. Maroth(4-2) got the start and had a bad night going 5.1 innings and allowed 4 runs. Oakland got the runs they needed on homers from Kielty(he homered twice) and another homer from Jermaine Dye. Mark Redman(3-2) got the start for Oakland and pitched good going 5 innings and allowing only 2 runs. The Tigers are now 19-20 on the season.
Notes-The Tigers got runs on a Craiq Monroe double and on an Omar Infante rbi....Detroit stranded 11 baserunners....Redman is 2-1 in 3 career starts against his former team(the Tigers)....Carlos Guillen added 2 hits....

Tigers 5 Oakland 1

The Tigers got back to 500 last night with a nice victory over the A's beating them 5-1. Bonderman(4-2) got the start and pitched great going 7 innings, giving up only 1 run, and allowing only 4 hits. This was the second time in less than a week that Bonderman 4 hit the A's. The Tigers got the runs they needed on homers from Monroe and Rondell White. The only run Bonderman gave up was on an Erubiel Durazo home run. Detroit has been looking great lately. They have been pitching much better and are hitting like they were earlier in the season. Their record now sits at 19-19 on the season.
Notes-White's homer was his 8th of the season....Bonderman is 4-2 on the season after being 6-19 last season....Monroe's homer was his second of the season....Greg Norton went 2-4 on the day....Alex Sanchez walked twice last night, his first 2 walks of the season....
MLB Notes-Last night was an incredible night for 2 major league pitchers. Randy Johnson threw just the 17th perfect game of all time against the Atlanta Braves. He is the oldest player ever, at 40 years of age, to throw a perfect game. Mike S. of the Giants also had an incredible night throwing a complete game 1 hitter.

5/17 Notes

The Tigers didn't play today so I want to talk about their improving pitching staff. In the last 7 games the Tigers have allowed only 19 runs. In that span they won 4 games and lost 3. They were scoring a lot of runs earlier in the season but they weren't pitching good. Now that it looks like they are starting to pitch better, their hitting needs to pick it up a bit if they want to get over 500 and stay there. The Tigers start a road series tomorrow with the Oakland A's. Bonderman(3-2) goes up against Rich Harden(2-2) in tomorrow's game at 10:05 p.m. eastern time.

Tigers 3 Rangers 1

The Tigers won today against the Rangers 3-1 on another great day of pitching. Jason Johnson(2-5) looked good going 5 strong innings and getting the victory. This was his first victory since opening day. Three relievers came in after Johnson and threw 4 shutout innings combined. Infante hit a homer and Alex Sanchez had 3 hits and 1 rbi. This was another nice victory for the Tigers who are one game away from being 500 again.
Notes-the Tigers are now 18-19 on the season....Urbina picked up his 6th save of the season....Brandon Inge picked up another rbi....Sanchez has 15 bunt singles on the season....Infante's homer was his second of the season....

Tigers 1 Rangers 6

The Tigers lost today against the Rangers 6-1 and are now 2 games under 500. Nate Robertson(2-3) got the start for Detroit and pitched good going 5.2 innings, giving up 3 runs, and striking out 10 Rangers. He now has 50 strikouts on the season, tied for second in the A.L. Robertson pitched good but Kenny Rogers(5-2) of the Rangers pitched even better. He threw 6.1 solid innings and gave up only 1 run. Hank Blalock, Alfonso Soriano and Michael Young all homered for the Rangers to put away the Tigers. The lone Tigers' run came off a Rondell White single. Detroit is now 17-19 on the season.
Notes-It took the Tigers till late June to get to 17 victories last season....White's RBI was his 30th of the season....Alex Sanchez (groin) missed his second straight game....Robertson's 10k's were a career high....Greg Norton added 2 hits today....

Tigers 7 Rangers 1

The Tigers are now one game away from being 500 after beating the Rangers yesterday 7-1. For the 4th straight game their pitching looked great. Knotts(1-0) started his first game of the season and looked sharp going 5 innings, and giving up only 2 hits and one run. Yan came in relief of Knotts and threw 4 perfect innings to pick up the save. Pudge continued his hot streak, hitting another 2 run homer and scoring twice. The Tigers are finally starting to get the games together. They are starting to hit and pitch good in the same game. Nate Robertson(2-2) gets the start today against Rogers(4-2).
Notes-the Tigers are now 17-18 on the season....Pudge's homer was his 6th this season....The Tigers have only allowed 8 runs in the last 4 games....

A good and bad series for the Tigs

This 3 game mini series with Oakland was good in some ways and bad in some ways. It was bad because they lost 2/3 games and the 2 games they lost were by one run each. They lost 5-4 in the first game(in 15 innings) and in the second game they lost 2-1. They finally got a victory today beating Oakland 3-1. The good part about this series is that their pitching finally showed signs that they may be coming around. The entire staff allowed only 7 runs in 33 innings against Oakland. Their bullpen allowed only 1 run in 13 innings of work. They now need to pitch and hit and they should get back to playing 500 ball.

Tigers 3 Oakland 1

The Tigers finally beat Oakland today 3-1 after losing the first 2 games of the series 5-4 and 2-1. Maroth(4-1) got the start and pitched a gem going 8 innings, giving up 5 hits, and allowing only one run. The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Pudge hit a 2 run homer, his 6th of the season. They took 3-0 lead in the third inning when Rondell White hit a triple to drive is Carlos Guillen. Oakland got one run in the 5th inning to make it 3-1 Detroit. Maroth didn't give up any more runs after that and Urbina pitched a perfect 9th inning to pick up the save. This was a big win for Detroit after losing 3/4 games.
Notes-the Tigers are now 16-18 on the season....Pudge's 2 RBIs today give him 28 on the season, most in the A.L....Carlos Guillen went 3/4 on the day....Urbina has 5 saves on the season....Rondell White now has 27 RBIs on the season....The last time a Tigers' pitcher started a season 4-1 was in 1998....

Tigers 1 Oakland 2

The Tigers lost another very tough game tonight against the A's. Oakland snuck past Detroit beating them 2-1. Tonight was a battle of pitching. Jeremy Bonderman(3-2) got the start for Detroit and pitched great going 7 innings, and giving up only 2 runs on 4 hits. Rich Harden(2-2) got the start for Oakland and pitched great as well going 7 inning, striking out 8, and giving up only one run. The Tigers' lone run come off a RBI single by Pudge in the 5th inning. Detroit had a golden opportunity in the third inning when they had runners on the corners with only 1 out, but Harden closed the door stiking out Pudge and getting Rondell White to fly out. Just when the Tigers are finally starting to pitch good their hitting lets them down for the second straight game. If they can continue to pitch good and start hitting the ball again they will get back on the right track. Maroth(3-1)gets the start tomorrow against former Tiger Mark Redman(2-1).
Notes-Detroit is now 15-18 on the season....Pudge's RBI was his 28th of the season....Bonderman walked 5 batters tonight....This was Bonderman's first loss in 3 tries against his former team....

Tigers 4 Oakland 5

The Tigers lost a tough last night against the Oakland A's in 15 innings. Jason Johnson got the start and had a rough outing going only 5+ innings and giving up 10 hits and 4 runs. Even though the Tigers lost, their bullpen looked great going 10 innings and only giving up 1 run. Unfortunately that one run was the game winner in the top of the 15th inning. Detroit is now 15-17 on the season and has missed 2 chances to get back to playing 500 ball. Game 2 of this mini series is tomorrow. Bonderman(3-1) goes up against Rich Harden(1-2).
Notes-Brandon Inge is leading the league in outfield assists....Pudge and Rondell White both had RBIs and are tied for the most RBIs in the A.L. with 27 a piece....Gary Knotts will make his first start of the season on Friday night....Oakland improved to 16-16 after beating the Tigers....The first 8 runs were given up by the starters....

Monday, May 10, 2004

The Tigers start a series tomorrow with the Oakland A's. They are fresh coming off a nice 5-3 victory over the Rangers. Nate Robertson(2-2) got the start and pitched a gem going 7 2/3 innings, striking out 7, and giving up only 3 hits. Nate held the Rangers' 1-5 hitters to zero hits. Sanchez and Norton also had good games each hitting solo homers. Rondell White got out of his slump driving in 2 runs. Not only did the Tigers win the game but they also won the series 2 games to 1 over Texas. They are now 15-16 on the season.
Notes-Pudge and Rondell White each have 26 RBIs on the season, the most in A.L....Sanchez's homer was his second of the season....
